The multi-functional bookbinding tool

The multi-functional bookbinding tool designed by Zhu Bingzuo is a versatile device that can perform various tasks during the bookbinding process, such as clamping, pressing, cutting, spine raising, and rounding. The tool is made of 304 stainless steel, beech wood, and pure copper. To ensure the device is sturdy and durable, all parts that require force during operation are connected with metal-to-metal joints instead of metal-to-wood joints, which are less secure and prone to loosening or slipping over time. The main frame of the multi-functional bookbinding tool is a 25mm-thick U-shaped solid rod made of 304 stainless steel, with three beech wood boards attached to it. The 25mm-thick 304 stainless steel solid rod makes the entire structure extremely stable. To make changing the clamping board more convenient, the tool is equipped with four neodymium magnets. When the clamping board is inserted into the tool, it naturally adheres to the tool due to the magnetic force, making it very easy to use.

In the design of the paper cutter, a 10mm-thick U-shaped solid rod made of 304 stainless steel is used as the main frame. To solve the problem of irreparable wear caused by friction between wood and wood during the back-and-forth cutting process in traditional designs, the tool is equipped with an aluminum alloy linear sliding track from LAMP in Japan. Two detachable, self-lubricating sliders from LAMP in Japan are installed under the paper cutter. This design ensures smooth cutting and gives the device an incredible lifespan.

 

The 25mm thick stainless steel rod is bent into a “U” shape by an automatic pipe bending machine, and the integrated stainless steel rod brings unprecedented firmness to the entire binding platform.

The use of trapezoidal screw rods is due to their self-locking characteristics. The self-locking principle of trapezoidal screw rods lies in their unique trapezoidal thread design, which generates sufficient friction between threads to prevent relative motion when subjected to a certain direction of force, thereby achieving self-locking function.

Designer’s message: During actual assembly, I found that I used over 100 parts to make this set of tools.

Designer’s message: When I designed this binding tool, my first consideration was to design a strong and durable binding tool. The main stress-bearing parts must be connected by metal to metal, not metal to wood, metal to wood. The wood joints don’t stay locked together for long periods of time, which I hate.  Zhu Bingzuo

Designer Message:  When I first chose the book clip board, I had two options. One was to use pure copper material, and the other was to use 304 stainless steel material. Using pure copper material would make the book clip board more beautiful, but the Mohs hardness of pure copper is only 3. The Mohs hardness of stainless steel reached 7. In order to prevent tool damage during long-term impact, I ultimately chose stainless steel. For easier installation, I also installed neodymium magnets on it.
